Favourite event in Havil 🏫:

My favourite event in Havil would have to be International Day 2019, when I was in Year 10. I remember that my class was paired up with the current Year 3's and their then homeroom teacher, Ms Felicia. I have had history with working alongside Ms Felicia and to put it simply, ‘I enjoy working with her.’

We were in-charge of representing Thailand which we were all rather familiar with, food-wise but not as culturally knowledgeable in. We created posters and planned on all the delicious delicacies that we would serve. Our group was lucky to have had many enthusiastic parents who were more than happy to assist us.

Although the Year 3 students were not as heavily needed in the technical elements of this event, they were given a greater duty and that was to perform a traditional Thai dance. It ended up being a huge success as they were incredibly adorable whilst pulling off all of the moves.

As most teens do, my friends and I took pictures together and sweated our stress away. Finally, the placings of the booths were announced and we won 2nd place which wasn't something we had particularly strived for.

I think that the biggest takeaway from this event was that it gave us a break from orthodox learning and examinations. We were able to benefit from learning other cultures when we walked to other booths, whilst munching on yummy food.

Shout Out ✊:

As cliche as it may be, I owe it all to my parents. Growing up, I always felt the pressure of living up to their expectations of me only to realise that me doing my best and enjoying the moment was all that they really wanted.

I am immensely grateful for their constant encouragement and belief in me. I love the fact that they are my harshest critics yet biggest fans. Besides that, I am glad that they have ingrained in me the importance of: education, being grateful and hustling. I hope that I am able to encapsulate these values with and especially, when I am away from home without them

Also, I would have to thank my classmates for tolerating my strong personality, as well as crazy ideas when planning class events or even decorating classroom doors for the various Holiday celebrations like Christmas and Chinese New Year. To my classmates, I wish you all the best in your future endeavors :)

Personal appreciation notes:

I'd personally like to thank Sean for taking the effort to teach me additional mathematics, during a time that I was convinced I would drop the subject.

Next, Zhi Yang for always replying my messages on "What's the homework today?" whenever I was absent.

Thirdly, See Wei, you have been an incredible partner whom I have always relied on in times of difficulty within Green House as well as in daily school life. I appreciate your ability to listen and sympathise. I am so proud of the person that you have grown to become within the three most interesting years of my life.

Zhao Yun, the way that you are fearlessly honest inspires me to speak my mind. I hate to admit this, but now, I actually miss how you yell my name and come running across the courtyard to hug me. I love how we mess around together and I love how you bring an energy that drowns the monotonous aspects of life.

Reema, you were truly God's gift to me in this last year of high school. I appreciate how we video call just for the two of us to be doing our own work. I love how we have opposite work ethics but it seems to do us and the work that we do justice. You are such a serene being that I feel peaceful just being in your presence. This is especially helpful since I tend to attempt to do 20 things at once.

Shirlene, you truly embody the phrase of 'tiny but mighty'. You're fierce, you work hard and you are bold. Also, you are a selfless person. Your heart for others and the world inspires me to look beyond my own life and my small circle of friends.

To all the Havil Teachers I would like to say, "Thank you for all that you do." There's a special place in my heart for the Green House teachers who have been so kind and supportive all these years. I will definitely miss working with you!

Also, I would like to personally thank: Mr Phan, Ms Lydia, Ms Catherine, Mr Hee, Ms Ling Si, Mr Lee, Mr Rozaidi and not forgetting, Mr Richard, who has personally taught me what it means to be a Malaysian. The time and effort that you, teachers, have taken to teach me is deeply appreciated.

SPEECH WRITE UP

Seeking a great perhaps

It seems unreal to be talking about Havil as a memory. Time really does fly by. I remember my first day of school in Havil back in year 8, I was extremely nervous. However, I was greeted by 3 girls, two of them who are still my classmates: Zhao Yun and See Wei.

Throughout the years, I’ve made more and more friends. It’s not that hard when you’ve got a small group of people in a class. If there’s a single thing that I could say I love most about the class of 2020: it’s how we always have break and eat lunch together, even if there’s no space for more than 4. I think that the number of strong friendships that you can form here, is underrated. Some classmates I’ve known since my first day of school and there’s one that I’ve only known for 9 months. Regardless of the amount of time that I’ve spent with my classmates, I am certain that they are incredible individuals who are truly capable of achieving the wildest of dreams that they have set for themselves. I wish them nothing but the best.

Of course, I would like to thank Ms Priscilla and the teachers who have gone above and beyond to host online classes and rearrange our final exams, whilst constantly reassuring us that it’ll all be okay. This may have not been the way I was expecting myself to express gratitude towards the people who I have had the privilege of knowing and being surrounded by, but I guess a video will do.

During this confusing and conflicting period of time, I’ve learnt that sometimes it’s good to expect nothing. There have been so many unexpected occurrences that have taken place within the past 9 months such as the haze and covid-19. Our ability to adapt to these unforeseen circumstances is what defines us. Don’t plan your entire life out, hoping that it’ll turn out that way. You’ll enjoy the ride much more when you don’t see the surprises coming. On that note, I’d like to end with a quote by John green “I go to seek a great perhaps. That’s why I’m going. So that I don’t have to wait until I die to seek a great perhaps.”
